The Maison Universitaire France–Japon (MUFJ) is a structure that depends on the Université de Strasbourg. Its aim is to promote and to encourage academic exchanges between France and Japan. It was created in 2001 by the initiative of the four universities of Alsace (ULP, URS, UMB, UHA), thanks to an allocation within the framework of the Etat-Région Plan. Its creation is based on the old and strong links that exist between France and Japan, in the economic and university domains. Even if it is located in Strasbourg, it has a national purpose, and its aim is to develop and strengthen teaching and research cooperation between French universities and research centers and their Japanese equivalents. Since 2002, the MUFJ has worked with the French Link Office of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), which is accommodated by the MUFJ.

The activities of the MUFJ are multiple and are composed of:

- The organization of exhibitions, symposiums, conferences, round-table conferences… about Japan
- The diffusion of information facilitating student, teacher and reasercher mobility, between France and Japan
- To look after the operations that can support scientific and university cooperation between the two countries (invitations to tender, grants, foundations…) and the diffusion of related information
- The promotion of initiatives of university collaboration between France and Japan, in collaboration with the Direction des Relations Internationales, research and training programs
- The reception of Japanese delegations and the promotion of contacts between them and their university or scientific partners of the Université de Strasbourg and Université de Haute Alsace.

The MUFJ is located close to the Esplanade campus in Strasbourg. It is open from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 12:00 am and from 2: pm to 5:00 pm.
It has, at your disposal, a seminary and lecture room with about 40 places, as well as documents about university institutions and Japanese research organizations. In the library, you may find 1000 general books about Japan (600 in French and 400 in Japanese), as well as numerous newspapers and magazines (French and Japanese). It is at the disposal of all people who are interested by exchanges between France and Japan.

The MUFJ is managed by professor Marie-Claire Lett, assisted by Ms Caroline Blatz.
